Description
Film shots of a wildebeest cow being hunted, killed and eaten by hyena. Commentary describes the scene. Over aerial shots and a map of the Serengetti Plain, commentary describes the geography of the... area and points out that it provides an excellent record of pleistocene mammals which coexisted with early hominids. The programme looks-at food sources for the herbivores on the Serengetti. Shots of wildebeest, zebras, antelopes, giraffe, buffalo, elephants, warthog and hippo feeding. Next, a brief look and listen at the feeding strategies of the carnivores on the Plain. Shots of lions, cheetah, wild dogs and leopard. Shots of cheetah making a kill and of leopard in a tree with its kill. Commentary points out problems which predators have of keeping their prey from scavengers. Shots of jackals and vultures. Finally, shots of wild dogs hunting and killing a zebra. The programme goes on to examine, some strategies adopted by herbivores for protecting their young from predators. Shots of zebra foal, wildebeest calf and antelope giving birth. Commentary also points out the value of camouflage as an aid to survival for herbivores. Shots of stampeding antelopes, impala, wildebeest and zebra. The hunting technique of lions is examined. Shots of a pride of lions stalking a herd of wildebeest and making a kill. Commentary points out the coordination necessary for this sort of cooperative hunting. The programme next examines the survival strategy of the hyena. Shots of hyenas displacing a lion from its kill, of hyenas scavenging at night, of hyena young and of a dispute between two packs. Finally the programme summarises the survival strategies of the animals of the Serengetti, as seen above. Shots of zebra foal, lion with dead zebra foal, wildebeest with calf, antelopes, lions with their kill, hyenas and their young, jackals, cheetah, leopard and spotted gazelle.;'The cheetah sprints after its quarry; the leopard uses quiet stealth; lions, wild dogs and hyenas co-operate in their hunting strategy. Their prey, have, on the other hand evolved complementary responses of defence. The huge herds of wildebeest find protection in numbers. Some of the smaller antelopes, like the dik-dik, find protection in solitary hiding. This programme looks at how both the predator and the prey have evolved different strategies for survival. All the examples in the programme are taken from the biggest nature reserve in the world; the Serengetti Plain in Tanzania.'
