Description
This is the final programme in a "mini series" on primate social behaviour. Filmed on location at the Terkes Regional Primate Center, Atlanta, Ga., it looks at the development of infant ...monkeys in captive social groups. The film was made during the birth season, and most of the emphasis is on the primary relationship of mother and newborn infant. Primate mothers adopt different styles of mothering, according to their experience, personality and the personality of their infants. These styles can be categorised as "restrictive" or "permissive" and examples are shown of both types of behaviour in rhesus monkeys. In some species the infant care is not so mother centred. Young marmosets are cared for by both parents and older siblings too. This alternative system is described over a sequence of marmoset behaviour shot originally for "Life on Earth". In their first year, infants learn a great deal about rhesus monkey behaviour in general and the foibles of their own families in particular. By the time they are a year old they are competent members of their social group and take their place in the dominance hierarchy.
