When studying ancient structures such as the Captain Reef its important to take a uniformitarian approach and the programme does this by comparing the fossilised reef with modern tropical barrier r...eefs. Its concluded that whilst Permian and modern reefs are broadly similar, one of the main differences is that in the Permian the reef-building organisms lived primarily beneath the zone of wave action.
