Description
This programme looks at the work being carried out by Clem Wardle and his team at the Marine Laboratory, Department of Agriculture and Fisheries for Scotland. At Aberdeen there is a group of 'racin...g saithe' in a large indoor tank. The fish have been trained to swim to an underwater flashing light in return for a food award. This work shows how the vast bulk of white muscle is rather like an 'emergency power pack' and only used occasionally when the fish needs to swim fast. At the University of St. Andrews Dr. Ian Johnstone has some saithe which have been trained to swim in a flume tank this research has shown that the fish have a maximun sustainable cruising speed, and that this involves sparing use of the white muscle. The programme concludes by looking at the work at Loch Ewew, Aultbea where mackerel escape action is studied using high speed film camera techniques.
