Description
This programme looks at two projects that are attempting to unravel the biology of the herring. On the inland waters of Loch Duich Ian Edwards measures the sonar signals bounced off fish swimming i...n special enclosures beneath the surface. the aim is to relate the size of the echo to the biomass of the herring shoals and so helping estimate stocks at sea. Another group, working at Oban, whilst studying the function of the herring swim bladder inits own right, have provided useful information on the effects of pressure on the swim bladder is involved in under water hearing as well as buoyancy.
