the palcenta is an organ found only in mammals and it plays a vital role during pregnancy in the exchange of nutrients and waste products between mother and fetus. This programme looks at some of the misconceptions held by early anatomists on the structure of the placenta and then at the pioneering work of three British physiologists: Hugget, Barcroft and Barron. The programme then looks at an operation on a sheep that will afterwards allow mother and fetus to be monitored throughout pregnancy with minimun disturbance. The success of this technique and confidence in the results is confirmed and rewarded by the birth of normal healthy lambs.
