Description
sea level is rising in some places and falling in others. To measure mean sea level the effects of tides and weather must be accurately known and the effects of land movements and ice cover can dom...inate local measurements. Uncertainties about future rates of rise in sea level are addressed by looking at fluxes of carbon to the deep sea (Joint Global Ocean Flux Study project); and by direct monitoring of sea level change with tidal guages, bottom pressure recorders and satellite altimetry. We still don't know if the greenhouse effect is causing sea level to rise more rapidly, but scientists predict that it will be too late to change our ways when the trend becomes clear by the turn of the century.
