Description
Archival film of early polar expeditions (Scott and Shackleton) is followed by scientists in Antarctica at work on the modern research vessel Polarstern, and on ice station '0', an Arctic island of... drifting ice. Ice information, ice cover and the seasonal (rather than diurnal) influence of light on a wide variety of organisms are described and illustrated for both polar regions, with especial reference to krill and migrating animals such as polar bears and whales. The important influence of cold water masses at the poles on world climate (as sinks for carbon dioxide and heat) is emphasised. Finally, we consider how the 'greenhouse effect' may alter the economic and strategic role of the polar oceans.
