Description
The Alps of Europe are the result of the most recent period of mountain building. Because these mountains are geologically so young - they were all formed within the last 100 million years, the reg...ion is often used as a model for the study of orogenic belts. This programme begins by defining what is now considered to be the 'Classical interpretation' of the formation of the Alps, proposed nearly a hundred years ago. But of course this theory does not take into account modern ideas about Plate Tectonics. The programme continues by looking at some exciting new metamorphic and structiural evidence of Alpine orogenesis from Sesia-Lanzo zone of Northern Italy. This evidence, together with what we know about plate tectonics, is used to present an 'alternative hypothesis' explaining the formation of the European Alps. This new hypothesis introduces the concept of plate tectonics. This programme make extensive use of animation techniques, microscope thin sections and pressure-temperature graphs.
