Description
This programme was filmed at the University of Stony Brook, New York, and also contains film illustrating excavations at Laetoli in northern Tanzania and at Swartkrans in the Transvaal in South Afr...ica. It examines the evolution of man from the hominid-pongid split about 7.5 million years ago against changing climactic and environmental conditions using a new approach. By precisely determining muscle function with electro miography (EMG) in humans and apes, together with a detailed examination of fossil bones, the programme shows the gradual anatomical changes that led to man, and puts events like the onset of bipedalism, the development of the opposable thumb, etc. into a proper perspective.
