Description
This programme introduces the geological history of the archipelago and shows how the volcanic environment and climate have produced many different kinds of habitat. How species got to the islands ...is illustrated, and how they become established in some cases with adaptive shifts. A spectacular example is provided by the caterpillar of the geometrid moth which has become an insect predator. The species definition problem is considered looking at the environmental induced plasticity of Ohia (Meterosideros) and limpets (Neritina). The problem of extinction of island endemics is shown with an item on Achtinellid snails. Conservation issues are addressed with particular reference to the alala (Hawaiian crow) and the nen (Hawaiian goose).
