Description
This programme follows members of the 1994 British Mount Everest Medical Expedition testing their physiological monitoring equipment in Wales. The doctors describe the physiological investigations ...they intend to make during their Everest ascent. These relate to problems of altitude such as mountain sickness and the similarity of altitude induced respiratory problems to those faced by those with lung ailments at sea level. In contrast to the problems of altitude, descending to great depth poses its own set of problems. Although other mammals, such as whales, dive to great depths humans are unique in trying to breathe while thet are there. The National Hyperbaric Centre in Aberdeen provides a scientific and safety service to the North Sea Oil industry. we observe the preparations for a simulated dive to 450 metres in the centre's high pressure chambers. Divers and members of the scientific teams describe the problems that face the diver and the purpose of their studies during the four week long 'Aurora '93' dive.
