Description
In this guided tour of the rocky shores in Pembrokeshire, Dr Irene Ridge and dr Robin Crump explore the rich diversity of plants (mainly) algae and animals (mainly barnacles and limpets) that inhab...it the intertidal zone between low and high water. They discover that plants and animals are found in broad horizontal bands (zonation) and in any one area there is vigorous competition for space on the rocks, even in highly exposed shores. seaweeds like the wracks exploit every possible rocks foundation and create safe areas for animals which shelter within their fronds. But some animals like limpets, sometimes called 'rabbits of the sea' are voracious predators of young algae and thus control the tendency of seaweeds to completely cover the shores. The diversity of animals and plants is a naturally zoned community where each organism is balanced on the edge of life waiting for each tide to bring in fresh supplies of food.
