Footage description: The programme opens with film of a mime by Marcel Marceau. In voice-over the OU's John Hamwee explains what the mime can tell us about systems thinking. To camera Hamwee explains the importance to systems thinking of identifying boundaries. He uses the TV screen as an example of a boundary. In interview a news cameraman explains how images are selected for inclusion in TV News bulletins. Film of a Seurat painting. Hamwee's commentary examines the painting from a systems viewpoint, emphasising the way in which the artist has composed the work. Film of Chalfield Manor, a 15th century English manor house. Hamwee explains what can be learnt from a study of the exterior and physical setting of the house. Interior shots, over which he comments on the social organisation of a 15th century house. Hamwee addresses the camera on the applicability of systems thinking. Film of Roman Catholic baptism service, then of a ship being launched, then of crowds bathing iin the River Ganges. Hamwee's commentary argues that these three activities form part of a common purification system. Extracts from T243/01 are shown in which Jennie Lee and Michael Elliott are interviewed about the National Theatre. Stills of vehicles (pram, car, bicycles) in a park. In voice-over Hamwee explains how systems thinking can help to make decisions about which vehicles should and which should not be allowed in the park. Film of a test cricket match over which Hamwee identifies several systems boundaries that can be applied to the game. Film of a Kerry Packer cricket game over which Hamwee comments on the importance of television in this kind of cricket. Hamwee to camera on the benefits of "system spotting".
