Commentary by Margaret Howard (v/o) explains briefly how company payrolls are handled. Over a montage of bank notes and coins, Margaret Howard discusses the disadvantages of cash money. With the aid of animated diagrams and shots of the sorting room at the Lloyds Bank Clearinghouse, commentary by Margaret Howard explains how cheques from all over the country are handled here. Margaret Howard (v/o) goes on to explain how cheques are exchanged between the clearing houses in London. Shots of an electric truck carryinq cheques through London traffic, shots of the Lloyds Bank sorting room and animated diagrams. Interview with Jack Dunn, General Manager, Lloyds Bank. He explains the need to have an automated cheque handling system in a large clearing bank such as Lloyds. Using shots of a bank cash dispensing terminal (Lloyds Bank Cashpoint), Margaret Howard (v/o) discusses the advantages and also some of the technical details of bank cash dispensing machines. Animated diagrams are also shown to illustrate points. Jack Dunn discusses the advantages of the Lloyds Bank Cashpoint system over the use of cheques. Montage of live action people using cash machines dissolve to black and white stills of queues outside a bank. Music of "Brother can you spare a dime" over. Shots of a supermarket checkout mock up inside an IBM building. The company demonstrates its automated bar-code checkout system. A demonstration inside an Army and Navy department store of their computerised point of sale system. The demonstration focuses, particularly, on the system's ability to check on credit card frauds. Finally an automated funds transfer terminal is demonstrated. This eliminates the need for cash or cheques completely as it allows a customer's bank account to be debited automatically from the point of sale.
