Footage description: John Naughton, in the studio, introduces the programme. Dick Morris, standing next to the milk counter in a supermarket, points out the importance of milk products in our diet. Morris interviews Warwick Peters, a dairy farmer. They discuss his policy of feeding milk cows on early spring rye grass to shorten the winter period during which the cows are fed on silage. Morris and Peters then briefly look at some machinery which processes silage for the cows. Morris and Warwick Peters, in the farm's dairy parlour, look at the automated concentrate feeding system in operation there. Cows are fed concentrates during milking. Warwick Peters explains how the system operates. Dick Morris next interviews Giles Tedstone, a dairy farmer who believes in maximum use of silage for his cows during the winter. Shots of cows in the fields and at the silage container. Tedstone explains that even he must supplement his cows' diet with some concentrates. Shots of cows eating concentrates. Morris and Giles Tedstone briefly discuss the cost aspect of feeding the dairy herd. Film shots of cows being milked in an automated milking parlour. Commentary explains the process. Particular emphasis is placed on the hygiene aspect. Shots of a refrigerated milk storage tank on the farm and of a miIk tanker taking the miIk away. Shots of the Milk Marketing Board (MMB) headquarter both exterior and interior. Commentary by Morris and an interview with John Chapman of the MMB explain the historical background of the MMB and its current function. Film shots of butter and cheese production in a factory. Commentary by Morris explains each process. John Chapman briefly explains how the price paid to farmers by the MMB is determined. Dick Morris, at the MMB Technological Centre, looks at some of the research on milk based food products which is being done there. Alan English, the Research Director, shows a sample of products developed there. John Chapman gives his view on the future of the MMB as it turns more to manufacture of milk based products. Dick Morris and Giles Tedstone sum up the programme. Shots of skimmed milk products and of a supermarket
