Footage description: John Naughton, in the studio, introduces the programme. Film of a tractor drawn binder in action. Commentary by Dick Morris explains how this machine works. Then, over shots of a combine harvester in action, Morris points out the advantages of this machine for the farmer. Peter Fuhr of Massey-Ferguson explains how a combine harvester works. He points out the individual components on a machine and also refers to a diagram. Morris and Fuhr look inside a combine harvester cab to see the instruments which provide the driver with the information he needs to operate the machine. Over still shots of old harvesting methods and machinery, Morris briefly traces the development of harvesting methods up to the introduction of the combine harvester. Then, over film shots of a combine harvester at work, he explains what this machine does which the old fashioned harvesting machines could not. Shots of Peter Fuhr demonstrating one of his combine harvesters to two farmers. He explains to them the improvements which have been made in this model. Boddington, one of the farmers above, explains over still shots of his farm, how the combine harvester fits into his farming system. More shots of Peter Fuhr demonstrating his combine harvester to the two farmers. Beldam, the second fanner, explains how the combine harvester fits into his farming system. Some still shots of his farm as he talks. Shots of a tractor and binder in action. Shots of Dick Morris examining a field which has been harvested with a binder and then one harvested with a combine. He points out the differences. Morris goes on to explain why the straw left after a harvest with a combine is a problem. Stills of old fashioned machinery, of cattle and of a farmer muck-spreading. Dick Morris (v/o), M. Boddington and R. Bedlam explain why they must burn the straw on their farms which is left behind by the combine harvester. Burning in the fields while they talk. Over shots of an old-fashioned binder, of a hand harvest, and of a combine in action, Dick Morris sums up.
