Zorkoczy lifts a telephone receiver and dials a call direct to New York to demonstrate the system in action. (He gets the New York weather report.) Zorkoczy with the aid of a diagram explains the dialing system which allows calls to be dialled direct to New York. Zorkoczy, with the aid of a map of the world, explains how calls are made to countries which have no direct links with the British telephone system. The Transit Switching network is one such system and Zorkoczy shows this on the map. Zorkoczy discusses the growth in demand for international telephone service. Histograph shows the increase in calls in and out of the U.K. for the years 1960-70 with projected demand to 1980. Zorkoczy discusses the role of international bodies such as CEPT, ITU, CCITT, etc. in planning and controlling the international telephone system. The 'World numbering plan', as an example of work done by international bodies, is discussed. Map of the world is used as an aid. Zorkoczy discusses some problems that arise when national telephone systems which evolved independently, are integrated into the international system. He shows various different arrangements for telephone dials as an example. Zorkoczy discusses the transmission links which are used in the international system cables, High Frequency radios, satellites, etc. He uses a map of the world as an aid. Zorkoczy and J. Hodgson discuss the ways in which expensive transmission links like ocean cables and satellites are financed. They also examine reasons for redundancy in transmission links over the same routes. Hodgson discusses future problems which may arise as a result of expansion of services. |
