Footage description: Richard Scott, inside the C.E.G.B. national control room, introduces the programme. Over shots of coal fired, oil fired and atomic electricity generating stations and of overhead transmission lines, Richard Scott lists some of the components of the national grid. Joe Rooney interviews Eric Chefneux, C.E.G.B. National control Manager, who explains how the grid is modelled, at least in part, so that network theory can be used to control the system. He uses as the subject for his model, the supergrid - the top layer of the grid system. Joe Rooney demonstrates that this top layer approach to modelling can give useful information. He looks at a small corner of the supergrid system and performs some calculations to work out the most efficient way to meet demand for power there. Eric Chefneux and Richard Scott go on to discuss how the C.E.G.B. with its computer actually determines the power transfer capability of various areas of the national grid so that overloading is avoided in cases of heavy demand. They go on to look at the central control room where the switching of loading in the network is actually done. Joe Rooney, with the aid of a network diagram, discusses the sort of information the Control Engineer could get from the C.E.G.B. on-line model and how he would use it to cope with fluctuating demand most efficiently and economically. Richard Scott summarises the programme.
