Description
This programme takes four systems of sheep production and compares how the energy flow from the sun through herbage and into the sheep is expressed in these systems and also how this energy flow is... managed by farmers. The systems chosen are the Soay sheep of St. Kilda, a sheep farm in the English Lake District, a lowland sheep farm in Hampshire and a highly intensive sheep farm in Buckinghamshire.

Footage description: R.M. Morris introduces the programme. Shots of Morris on a sheep farm at Glencyne. Flow diagram of the ecosystem showing grass deriving energy from the sun and in turn providing energy for other parts of the system including sheep production. Further shots of the sheep farm at Glencoyne illustrate the flow diagram. Film shots of St. Kilda illustrate the ecosystem and geography. Emphasis is put on the sheep component of the ecosystem. Commentary by R.M. Morris. Film shots of George Wilson Farms at Glencoyne, Scotland. This is a Highland sheep farm. Commentary by Morris describes the Geology and herbiage found here. He then describes the operations on the farm. George Wilson briefly describes hay production on his farm. Morris commentary discusses the effect of weather on farm operations. Film shots (speeded up) show the weather for a one hour period on the farm. Change from sunshine to snow is seen. Lambing operation is shown. Commentary explains. Shots of sheep being treated for ticks and immunised against dysentry. Lambing operation continued. Commentary' explains Sheep shearing at Glencoyne shown. Commentary explains. Shots of shorn sheep being dipped against maggot fly. G. Wilson discusses some aspects of sheep production on a national level. Shots of dead sheep, bogs, leached soil, etc. Commentary by Morris discusses the energy losses in the Highland sheep production part of the ecosystem. Several very scenic shots of the Glencoyne surrounds. Commentary by G. Wilson discusses the social implication of sheep production. (Maintenance of an attractive envirenment). Morris sums up three outputs of highland sheep production. Shots of a sheep farm at Chilbolton Down, Hants. Commentary by Morris discusses the differences in operation between this and a highland sheep farm. Harry Ridley farm manager explains the division of labour between arable and sheep on the farm. Shots of farm operations while Ridley talks. Lambing operations on this farm shown and explained by Morris and Ridley. Morris discusses methods of keeping up fertility of arable soil on the farm. Shots of tractor ploughing field. Ridley dicusses fertility build up of the arable soil. Shots of sheep farm at Gt. Horwood Bucks., and its operations. Commentary by Morris explains the intensive lamb raising techniques used here. David Murdoch farm manager explains how intensive sheep raising evolved on this farm. Shots of the farm while he explains. Morris explains how seasonal sheep breeding conditions were simulated in order to produce lambs for the early spring market. Shots of intensive sheep houses with windows shuttered. Lambing operation explained by Murdoch. Shots of lambs feeding on concentrates (lambs are not allowed to go to grass) Shots of muck from intensive livestock units being loaded onto a truck for spreading. Murdoch explains the operation. Shots of muck, being spread. Murdoch explains the effect of heavy manure treatment on arable crop field. Shots of the farm and farm operations. Morris sums up some of the advantages of intensive livestock production.
