Description
Students meeting chemistry for the first time can find it difficult. If so, this programme is for them. Its aim is to demonstrate the experimental basis of chemistry and during the programme the st...udent has to make observations from the screen. After the programme the student is expected to formulate theories of chemical behaviour, which are evaluated in an associated radio programme 'Understanding Chemistry'. The programme starts with the action of heat on substances and continues with combustion, oxidation and the properties of oxides of metals and non-metals. Compounds featured include oxides of lead, zinc, magnesium, copper, phosphorus, carbon, sulphur, calcium and sodium. The programme continues with a study of acids and bases and demonstrates the experimental evidence for the ionic theory using copper sulphate. Finally, the properties of carbon tetrachloride are contrasted with those of common salt, sodium chloride. The result is a very visual approach to over fifty experiments beautifully presented by Zoe Gonord. The chemical reactions have been filmed in especially large close ups - some with high speed and some with time lapse photography.
