Description
The care of patients with terminal cancer: this programme is about new attitudes which have evolved from the hospice movement. They can be summarised briefly as new approaches to giving a patient q...uality of life in the last few weeks, and to relieving pain using the stronger analgesic and narcotic drugs. The programme also indicates sources of opposition to these ideas and asks, is it justified? Is the medical profession really concerned with what is best for the patient, and those left behind when the patient dies? After seeing the film, the student should be able to critically comment on the view that one way of society dealing with the cancer problem is simply to accept that it exists and try to evaluate what is best from the point of view of the patient and his or her family and friends. Alongside the material in the block, the student should be able to identify the differences in approach to the more conventional treat and cure or prevention policies.
