Description
The aim of this programme is to describe what cancer is - why it kills people - and what can be done to cure or prevent it. For most of the programme, these questions are examined in the context of... breast cancer. The treatment techniques described are surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, and various approaches to these are considered by a cost-benefit analysis. The prevention methods described are 'don't smoke', 'eat carrots' and 'look forward to the hormone pill'. These are considered critically and the issues raised taken up in the associated radio programme. After the film, the student should be able to follow the last section of the block much more clearly because he or she will have seen some of the situations written about. The film is explicit and abbreviated in style and contains some pictures taken during and after operations - but they have been included because we wanted to bring home to people that discussions and decisions about cancer 'options' are ultimately decisions over matters which, for individuals, represent personal private disasters - and to explain some of the reasons why we have been unable to deal with the cancer problem more effectively.
