Description
'The locations in this film are Rio de Janeiro and the Chapada do Araripe in Ceara province. The subject was Cretaceous fossil fish whose internal structure, e.g. gill lamellae, musculature, etc. h...ad been preserved by bacterial induced phosphatisation in the tissue within a few hours of death. These features were examined with SEM (scanning electron microscopy). The visit to the location where they were found in Brazil was to try and understand why such freak fine preservation had occurred - and at the same time look at other modes of fossilisation - e.g. silification, preserving the cellular structure of wood, etc. The evolutionary significance of these Brazilian fossils was demonstrated - particularly by studies on a mass mortality and by articulation studies on finely preserved pterosaur bones, which are also found in concretions along with the fish.'
