Description
This is a vibrating string which has got a stationary wave on it. There has been a lot of theory in this week's unit about vibrating strings and things like that, so we thought you might like to se...e it actually happening, so here's Guy Fletcher, Visiting Fellow in Physics at the Open University, to show you one or two experiments with that vibrating string. Dr Pentz showed how energy could be pumped into membranes. It is an analogy which can be used to explain the quantisation of electrons in atoms. Dr Walton is going to pump energy into atoms. Can an atom be persuaded to absorb energy at a particular value? If so, there should be a stationary state inside the atom.
