Description
Tyrese -- Born in inner city Birmingham, Tyrese is the third child of Marie Blake and Jamal Hakeem. His parents have worked hard to give him a better life and a strong sense of himself as a black p...erson. But it hasn't always gone the way they hoped. Marie is highly ambitious; she believes that her energy and drive are the product of a tough childhood. Since Tyrese was born, and despite being severely dyslexic, she managed to get a degree and started climbing her way up the career ladder. But over time Jamal and Marie grew apart, and by the time Tyrese was three years-old, they decided to separate. For their children it's an uncertain time, at school the teachers can see worrying changes in Tyrese's behaviour. Since Tyrese turned five, Marie's decided that, to get the life she wants for them all, she's going to have to take a gamble. She's risked everything to take out a large loan to open a clothes shop on the outskirts of Birmingham. But three months in, the bills are mounting up and the gamble isn't paying off. How will Tyrese be affected by this financial uncertainty? Can his parents manage to establish a strong, stable base against the odds? -- James -- James's life so far has been turbulent. But despite all the problems, his ever-optimistic mum Carol, still believes that she can give James and his eight-year-old sister Bernie something she didn't have - a happy and stable childhood. James has had to cope with his parents' separation and its difficult consequences. When Carol's new relationship turned sour, he found himself the target of his mother's violent ex-partner. Social services have hovered for much of James's life and at times felt the need to intervene. Although he shows a remarkable ability to cope with adversity, will his experiences at home affect the way he deals with the outside world? And where can James find the stability that he needs in his life?
