Description
Our solar system is full of useful, valuable resources like iron, nickel, gold, platinum, and most importantly, water. But who gets to exploit these resources? Astrobiologists like to “follow the... water” in their search for the signs of life, but the space mining industry will also see water as a key resource. How compatible are these interests? Water ice will be crucial to our exploration of the solar system because it can be used to create breathable air, hydrogen fuel, and drinking water needed for human settlements. This video covers the issues of in situ resource utilisation (ISRU), the legal discussions, the Outer Space Treaty of 1967, preventing space based conflict, and the protection of space resources. Narrated by Anna Ptaszynski. Written by Thomas Cheney, Rob Hawthorn. Script Editors Hannah Cooper, Anna Ptaszynski. Design and animation Michael Dring. Directed by Rob Hawthorn. Produced by Made by Gravity. Thanks to NASA, ESA, Karen Olsson-Francis, Victoria Pearson. Special thanks to Louise Thomas, James Harkin. Funded by OU Strategic Priorities Fund Quality Related (SPFQR) (Research England).
