Description
Fieldwork is really fundamental to the environmental and Earth sciences and so in this session we’ll talk about some of the brilliant opportunities that OU students have to do fieldwork. Environm...ental and Earth science students can take part in short, intensive, residential field schools at one of several field centres around the country and can join the many day trips organised by tutors where they get to practice some key field skills. But not everyone can get into the field so we’ll introduce other ways that we’ve developed to get students doing fieldwork, such as using live, interactive broadcasts we call ‘fieldcasts’ where students direct the lecturers to carry out a field investigation. And we’ll also talk about other technology we use to bring field data collection to students, like a tree we’ve got wired into the internet and the OU’s pioneering citizen science work with Treezilla: the Monster Map of Trees.
