Description
Women in Engineering: How we support our female engineering students – who are just 10% of the whole engineering cohort. We have an annual conference to coincide with International Women in Eng...ineering Day (INWED) where we encourage female students to network and support each other and where they can hear stories from practising female engineers. We are an Education Partner with the Women’s Engineering Society enabling our female students to have free ‘student supporter’ membership, which gives them access to a monthly newsletter, quarterly journal and lots of resources. We also support students to attend the WES Student Conference in November. Two students – Caz Ingram and Sarah Kuklewicz have set up a WES student group and would love to have more members. The group liaises with WES student groups in other universities. Finally we have a Women in Engineering forum on the subject website where we discuss all kinds of issues and offer support and advice. This forum is open to anyone, and we’d love to have more male allies supporting our female students. Design and Innovation: There are two parts to the Design and Innovation session: 1. We will introduce the Design and Innovation qualification and its pathways. We will talk about the core design modules (using a prop for each) U101 (box) T217 (chair model) and T317 (3D printing). 2. We will talk about our first ever ‘Annual Show’. We picked up a great tradition from Art and Design schools, who show the great work that their students have done throughout the year in an End of Year show – also called ‘Annual Show’. We will talk about the Annual Show we organise this year on campus and link to the online exhibition website accompanying the exhibition on campus. We had over 40 entries to the competition for the Annual Show. Together with AL’s and students, the qualification team chose entries to be printed and shown at the exhibition on campus. We also chose the winner for the best design, second and third runner up. These will be revealed in the Student hub life session. We will talk about the winning designs (and if time allows about the runner up). We are extremely proud of the work that has been done. Come join us at our Annual Show which opens on 10 July!
