Description
In this session, we hope to give you a brief overview of some of the things that make Greek drama interesting and important. We’ll introduce you to both tragedy and comedy, including the themes t...hese plays addressed and the ways in which they were staged. We’ll think about the kind of stories that Greek plays tell, which are often based on well-known mythical subjects, and we will explore their meaning at the civic level. We’ll introduce the concept of theatrical competition in Athens, and discuss the major role that it played in the religious life of the city. Then we’ll look more closely at some examples of Greek drama, including some very well-known plays and our own personal favourites that introduced us to the world of the Greek theatre.
