Critical information studies

The group’s goal is to study and change the impact of information on society. We seek to study information and the narratives which shape it from a wide range of disciplinary perspectives, through theory-building, empirical work, action research, and transdisciplinary dialogue. Our approach is critical: we study and seek to impact race, power, gender and class perspectives on information, taking both a historical and a contemporary approach.

Example projects

  • Critical information/data studies & cultural industries (David Chapman)
  • Models of information as narrative (Magnus Ramage)
  • Algorithmic racism and decolonial computing (Mustafa Ali)
  • Internet governance (Ray Corrigan)
  • Problem-oriented engineering (Jon Hall)
