Accessible formats

Below are links to organisations providing resources in different accessible formats and is intended to help supplement Open University student study materials.


Provides a Talking Book Service covering popular fiction, classics and some non-fiction audio books for an annual subscription and lends Braille books free of charge. The RNIB catalogue now incorporates Revealweb, formerly an independent database of accessible format resources available for purchase, loan or reference from suppliers such as RNIB NLB Calibre cassette library etc

Audio library offering over 6,000 titles including plays, poems and classic novels.  Most books are available in digital format on MP3 CD or USB memory stick.

Listening Books
Listening books provides CDs via the post and downloadable or streamed versions via the internet to people in the UK for an annual fee.

Bookshare UK
Bookshare is based in the U.S. and provides access to an online library of digital books for print disabled people. The UK Bookshare page provides guidance on which books are available in this country. A membership fee is charged.


National Talking Newspapers and Magazines
National newspapers and magazines are provided on audio tape, disk, e-mail and CD-ROM on subscription.

Talking News Federation
Provides access to local and independent newspapers in audio format via cassettes, CDs or the internet for an annual fee.

Tactile Diagrams

RNIB Tactile Graphics 
Provides tactile diagrams, maps and pictures for blind and partially sighted people.

Arts and culture

Culture 24
Gateway to information on over 3,000 museums, galleries and heritage attractions.

Non UK

The National Council for the Blind of Ireland
Books available on tapes and Braille to those registered blind with the NCBI or fulfilling the library's registration criteria. A tape of articles taken from national newspapers is available on subscription.
