Alerting systems for tracking new developments

Email alerts, RSS feeds, and tracking engines allow you to:

  • Set up, save and re-run your searches against the latest additions to databases.
  • Set up profiles to automatically receive the contents pages of journal issues.
  • Receive notification of articles recently published and added to a database.
  • Keep up to date with breaking news
  • Discover new Internet resources in your field

Journals

  • Zetoc  is a multi-disciplinary database of 20,000 research journals, and 16,000 conference proceedings which is able to be used by current students and staff. Set up alerts to be emailed table of contents of newly published journals or set up author/title alerts, or set up RSS feeds for journals in Zetoc.
  • JournalTOCs  is the largest freely available collection of scholarly journal Tables of Contents (TOCs). It is for anyone who's looking for the latest or most current papers published in the scholarly literature. It is free, searchable, and provides alerts on request.
  • JOPML  is a service that lets you search for journal RSS feeds collected by the ticTOCs project, and download results in OPML format for importing into feedreaders.
  • Set up a database search and you will be notified if any articles which would be retrieved by your search, are added to the database. This option is offered by many databases, including Academic Search Complete, Web of Science and Science Direct.
  • Citation databases, such as Scopus and Web of Science, offer the option of citation alerts. If an article, which cites your selected article or author, is added to the database you will be alerted.
  • informaworld  offers a range of alerting services including search alerts notifying you when new content matching your search is added to a database, citation alerts and alerts to new issues of journals.

Books

  • Wiley-Blackwell Book Alerts  is an alerting service from Wiley-Blackwell Publishers which requires you to register as a user. You will then be regularly notified by e-mail about the latest books in your selected subject area.
  • Amazon.com Alerts  Sign up for regular email updates tailored to your own choices, by genre, subject, format.

Internet Resources.

  • TrackEngine  is a free service which will email you when websites selected by you are updated.
  • Watch That Page  is a service you can set up to automatically collect new information from your favourite websites.

Mailing Lists

  • JISCmail  provides access to UK academic discussion lists. You can search or browse by subject category to find lists on a specific topic.

News

  • Nexis UK  is a database of new reports including UK national and regional newspapers and major newspapers from around the world. Create an alert to be notified by email of news stories on your selected topic.
  • BBC News  is updated every minute of every day. This site also has the option to set up an RSS feed.

Official Publications

  • UKOP  is a catalogue of UK Official Publications online. It is updated daily and contains a searchable database. Click on the Account Login tab then select Register for Updates to receive weekly email updates in your chosen subject area.
