The Open University has appointed Sir David Normington GCB as its next Pro-Chancellor and Chair of Council.
Sir David will take up the role following the conclusion of Malcolm Sweeting’s term of office and has been appointed for an initial four-year term from 1 August.
A highly respected leader in public service and higher education governance, Sir David brings extensive experience from a career spanning government, public appointments and university leadership. He served as Permanent Secretary at both the Department for Education and Skills and the Home Office before becoming First Civil Service Commissioner and Commissioner for Public Appointments.
Most recently, Sir David served as Chair of Council and Pro-Chancellor at the University of Warwick, where he led the governing body through a period of significant institutional growth and change.
Professor David Phoenix, Vice-Chancellor of The Open University, said:

The appointment follows a comprehensive recruitment process led by the Pro-Chancellor Appointment Committee.
