Description
In this radio programme, Bill Purdue examines the debate in the House of Commons on the Reform Bill introduced by the Liberal administration of Lord Russell in March 1866. The programme concentrate...s on the opposition to the bill of a minority of Liberals which led to its defeat and provides an edited reconstruction of some of the highlights of what was actually a series of debates taking up several full days of parliamentary time over a three month period. The programme aims to demonstrate the tone and style of an important debate in the commons during the Victorian period; to exemplify some of the main arguments used both for and against the widening of the franchise; to deepen the understanding of the divisions within the Liberal Party and the fluidity of the parliamentary situation at this time, and finally to show the sequence of events which did finally lead to the passage of the second Reform Act.
