"Professor Ferguson presents a radio 'portrait' of the poet and scholar Francesco Petrarca (1304-1374), selecting those themes in his life and work which account for his exceptional influence ...on the development of European culture. After a brief biographical introduction Professor Ferguson analyses the nature of the love poetry by which Petrarch is best known: its preoccupation not only with Laura, whom he loved for so long, but also with Christian and Platonic themes; his great significance as one of the early Humanists; his enthusiasm for classical antiquity and vital work in the preservation and transmission of certain classical manuscripts. "I see Petrarch", Professor Ferguson concludes, "as a man of the Middle Ages... steeped in religion and religious attitudes. But I see him, too, as a modern man... above all, as a man of the Renaissance..."
