Description
There have been widely differing interpretations of the fourteenth century in Europe; was it an epoch of stagnation brought about by plague, famine and war; or of preparation for the economic, soci...al and political advances of the modern world? Professor Hilton examines both the nature of the evidence and the reasons which have caused different generations of historians to emphasize some aspects at the expense of others. He also gives his own view and his reasons for believing that "whatever... the setbacks ...the mediaeval economy was becoming more complex and diverse in character than it had been even in the supposedly boom conditions of the late thirteenth century".
