H.C. Robbins Landon, who presents this illustrated talk, is one of the world's foremost authorities on eighteenth century music and especially on Haydn. He has been a pioneer and leader in the expa...nsion of Haydn research which has taken place during the last two decades. In this illustrated talk he describes Haydn's development from his first symphony at the end of the 1750s to Symphony No.70 (1779). The talk describes the differences between the Mannheim and Vienna symphonic schools; the nature and style of Haydn's earliest symphonies; and the character, significance and effects of the symphonies of Haydn's Sturm und Drang period.
