Description
This programme was originally broadcast in 1976 as part of the BBC Continuing Education radio series "You Said It". (Repeated in 1980). The speaker is Dr. Peter Trudgill from Reading Univ...ersity, author among other things of "Sociolinguistics" (Penguin 1974 ). He begins by stating that, to a linguist everybody has an accent, as "accent' is merely the way words are pronounced. If you pronounce words, you have an accent. He goes on to examine, in some detail and with the help of recordings from BBC Archives and other sources, the regional and class accents of English as it is spoken in England.
