16. Briggs Building

The Briggs Building is named after Asa Briggs, Lord Briggs of Lewes (1921-2016). Briggs was a member of the original Planning Committee for The Open University. The report of the Committee, published in January 1969, formed the foundation stone upon which The Open University was subsequently built, and Professor Briggs was part of several key decisions - including the academic and staffing structure of the University and the budget and Charter under which it would operate. Lord Briggs was the third Chancellor of The Open University from 1979 to 1994. The building that bears his name (previously called Offices 4) opened in 1994.

Further information about Lord Briggs can be found in the Asa Briggs featured item page.

A video with Karen Foley and Daniel Weinbren about the Briggs Building can be viewed on YouTube.
