Angela Burdett-Coutts was a British philanthropist and one of the richest women in Britain during the nineteenth century. During her lifetime she gave more than £3 million to good causes including scholarships and endowments. With her friend Charles Dickens she co-founded Urania Cottage in London - a home for young women who were homeless and destitute. At the age of 67 Angela married her 29 year old secretary William Bartlett. He took her surname and they remained married until her death in 1906 at the age of 92.
