Description
Edric Gifford was titled 3rd Baron Gifford at the age of 21 after the death of his father in 1872. In 1874 he was a lieutenant in the British Army during the Third Anglo-Ashanti War in Ghana. Following the campaign he was awarded the Victoria Cross. He left the army in 1876 and was appointed Colonial Secretary of Western Australia and later of Gibralter. In 1889 he became a director of the British South Africa Company.
