John Hardy was a barrister and the Conservative MP for Bradford. He was from Yorkshire and was Court Recorder of Leeds for 27 years. His ancestors were Land Stewards to the Spencer-Stanhope family at Cannon Hall. Hardy was the principal co-owner of the Low Moor ironworks, an iron foundry based near Bradford which supplied wrought iron products around the world for about 150 years. When he died in 1855 Hardy left an estate of £300000 which is over £30 million today.
