Description
William J. Stewart was a solicitor based in south London. He was also an author of short stories and novels including 'Footsteps behind him: a novel of English life' published by Sampson Low in 1862. He was editor of the 'London Illustrated News' from 1860-1862, for which he wrote several short stories. He was a half-brother to Sir Richard Couch who became Chief Justice of Bengal. It appears William's health was not strong and he died at the age of only 32. He was unmarried and the beneficiary of his estate was his half-sister Susan Couch.
