Description
Noel Quigley is from Belfast and qualified as a quantity surveyor. He was imprisoned in 1972 aged twenty four in Crumlin Road Gaol and was one of the Provisional IRA prisoners on the Hunger Strike for political status. In 1973 he was among the first group of prisoners to be transferred from Crumlin Road Gaol to the newly created Cages (Compounds of Maze Long Kesh). He was instrumental in setting up the political prisoner education system for the Provisional IRA Compounds and was their first Education Officer. He organised political lectures from outside academics and was involved in negotiations for The Open University to come into the Com...pounds. He studied Social Sciences in 1974 but didn’t sit his exams because of the disruption caused by the burning down of the Long Kesh Camp. He was imprisoned again in the Republican wings of the H Blocks in 1980 and went on the Blanket Protest after which in 1985 he studied Technology with The Open University. After his release he worked with Sinn Féin in North Belfast.
