Geraldine Ward grew up in Tyrone left school at sixteen and was imprisoned in Maghaberry Prison in 1988 aged nineteen. She studied O and A Level Sociology took part in Woodwork classes and started her study of Social Sciences with The Open University in 1995. Geraldine was the officer in charge of the Republican women in Maghaberry in 1998 and had temporary release to speak at the Sinn Féin Ard Fheis on their behalf that year. She was released in 1998 studied for the final two courses for her degree and gained her honours degree in 2000.
