Description
Liam McAnoy is from West Belfast. He attended St Peter’s Secondary School left with no qualifications and was interned aged seventeen on the Maidstone Prison Ship Magilligan Prison and Long Kesh Internment Camps. He got out in 1972 and was imprisoned in the Official IRA Compounds of Long Kesh (the Maze and Long Kesh Prison) between 1973-1987. Liam became involved in education through the encouragement of older prisoners gained O and A Levels and commenced his studies of Social Sciences with The Open University in 1981 graduating in 1987. After his release he studied a course in Politics at Queen’s University Belfast worked with the Uls...ter Peoples College teaching Social Studies and then in Community Development at Ulster University. At the time of interview in 2011 he worked in a Health Education and Learning Programme in one of the most disadvantaged communities in Belfast.
