Description
Michael Culbert attended St Thomas’ Secondary School in West Belfast left after his O Levels and studied A Level French while working. He was imprisoned from 1978 to 1993 in the H Blocks (the Maze and Long Kesh prison) and began his Open University studies after the Blanket Protest in 1983. He studied courses in Social Sciences Education and Counselling. He was involved in passing on ideas learned from The Open University and teaching basic education to fellow Republicans in the prison. Michael was awarded his honours degree in Social Sciences in 1992 and a postgraduate Diploma in Education and Counselling in 1993. After his release Mich...ael gained a postgraduate Diploma in Peace Studies from the University of Ulster in 1994. From 1995 to September 1999 he was employed as a Personal Development Tutor in Springvale Training Limited. At the time of interview in 2012 Michael was Director of Coiste Na nIarchimí the umbrella organisation of the Republican ex-prisoner network throughout Ireland.
