Description
Eamonn MacDermott attended St Columb’s College in Derry and was arrested aged nineteen in the middle of his A Levels. He was imprisoned as a Special Category prisoner in Magilligan Prison from 1974-1976 and in the H Blocks (the Maze and Long Kesh Prison) from 1977-1992. In 1984 after the Blanket Protest he was responsible for the academic education programmes for Republican prisoners. He studied courses in Social Sciences English Literature and Science with The Open University from 1984 and gained his honours degree in 1991. After his release in 1992 he studied for an MA in Peace and Conflict Studies at Magee College University of Ulster... in Derry. At the time of interview in 2012 Eamonn was working as a journalist.

Description: Eamonn MacDermott remembers how using the experiment kit for his Level One Science course (S102) posed problems in the confines of the H Blocks. One experiment was with a bunch of keys and another required going out at night to measure the moon neither of which were allowed!
