Paddy grew up in a rural community left school at sixteen with few qualifications and was imprisoned in 1984 in the H Blocks (the Maze and Long Kesh Prison). He started with The Open University in 1990 and studied Social Sciences, Philosophy and History graduating with an honours degree in 1997. He was Education Officer for the Republican prisoners in the H Blocks in the 1990s. At the time of interview in 2011 he worked for Coiste Na nIarchimí - the Republican ex-prisoner network. Paddy interviewed Jenny Meegan his former tutor for this archive.
